Michael S. McKay, DMD, MAGD
Dr. McKay grew up in an era when cavities were common. Dentistry has now improved to the point that it is possible to grow up without any cavities at all. How have we done this? Through science, research and education. The word doctor comes from the Latin “to teach.” Dr. McKay sees his role, first and foremost, as educating patients about caring for their teeth. Appointments at McKay Family Dentistry focus on preserving natural teeth and the relationship between oral and systemic health.
Dr. McKay attended the UConn School of Dental Medicine in the first few years that it was open. The department heads for all of the specialties in dentistry had been hired but their residents had not yet arrived. Because of this, Dr. McKay was able to have one-on-one mentoring from each department head during the first year of his career. He continues to stay current with new developments in each field of dentistry, reading scientific and medical journals voraciously as well as taking continuing education courses.
In keeping with his passion for education, Dr. McKay was a Visiting Associate Research Professor at the UConn School of Dental Medicine in Farmington, CT, for 15 years. He taught Critical Thinking in Dentistry.
Dr. McKay and his staff practice minimally invasive dentistry, where the goal is to preserve the patient’s real teeth and only perform dental procedures that the patient truly needs. Because Dr. McKay practiced all of the specialties in dentistry for decades, he offers his patients a thorough understanding of their options for treatment. His extensive knowledge of how oral health relates to overall health in combination with utilizing the latest dental research, technology, materials and methods helps his patients reach their highest attainable levels of oral health. Research increasingly shows the relationship between dental disease and systemic disease, and by taking a scientific approach to providing dental care Dr. McKay keeps his patients informed and treats them to maximize their oral health and create beautiful smiles.
